About Us

About us

In 1905, Father Joseph Keller traveled from Dallas to Lubbock to offer Mass for Mexican-American Catholics in Lubbock at the Merrell Hotel. In December 1924, Bishop Joseph Lynch and the Diocese of Dallas endeavored to open Lubbock’s first Catholic Parish and dedicated it to St. Joseph. St. Joseph Catholic Church was one of Bishop Lynch’s visions. As the first parish in Lubbock, St. Joseph was established in 1924. This opened the opportunity for migrant Mexican-American families and others to worship and cultivate their Catholic faith on the north side of Lubbock, now called the Guadalupe neighborhood. “In many ways, St. Joseph is the heartbeat of that neighborhood. It stands now as a symbol of Catholicism, which extends back all the way to the days of the Coronado Expedition.” Most Reverend Robert M. Coerver, Bishop of Lubbock
